Erika Y. Cook, a program management analyst at Mission Technologies, recently took part in her first benefits and wellbeing webinar, “HERO: HII Employees Reach Out: Sun Protection.” She also won the giveaway prize: a beach chair and umbrella.
With a background as a lifeguard, Erika knew firsthand how easy it is to overlook proper suncare. But now, as a parent, she’s making sure her daughter takes a more informed approach to sun safety.
“I was of the generation where I’d get compliments that I was so tan, which of course felt great, but I’d also ignore proper suncare at times, especially at the beach, and suffered burns,” she said. “The generation before me spent endless hours tanning with limited knowledge of what they were actually doing to their skin, which I am happy to say the generation that came after me is finally treating their skin like the vital and sensitive organ that it is.
“I have irreversible skin damage, which is frustrating,” she continued. “But it could be worse. And it is never too late to begin an educated suncare routine. My daughter will benefit from my experience, but also from the new information that is available to us all. My hope is her skin stays flawless for decades to come.”
During the webinar, Erika learned several helpful tips. One that stood out was the importance of applying enough sunscreen.
“Look for broad spectrum sunscreen and make sure you are using a fourth to a half teaspoon on your face, which is 2mg per sq centimeter, which is what the SPF levels are based on,” she said. “Make sure to apply generously and reapply as directed. The higher SPF does not equate to needing to apply less often.”
As much as Erika would love to enjoy her new umbrella and chair, she said, “I’m certain my daughter will claim the umbrella and chair as her own—and she will enjoy this prize for years to come!
“These webinars are valuable,” she concluded, “and I look forward to attending more!”
