Celebrating Ethics & Compliance Awareness Month
“Our customers count on us to be good stewards of their funds as we execute their projects. Fair adjudication for direct work is critical to enshrine the trust they put in our team.”
That statement comes from Sarah Turner, director of programs for Mission Technologies Warfare Systems group in Columbia, MD, and it’s the kind of clarity and conviction that is not just about timekeeping. It’s about trust, responsibility, and what ethical leadership looks like in real life. As President Andy Green shared, our teams carry an essential responsibility in supporting national security, and the trust our customers place in us is foundational to our mission.
In a Q&A below, Sarah explains how to lead by example and tips for reporting time accurately.
How Sarah Leads by Example
• She keeps her calendar aligned with actual work, including unexpected tasks.
• She asks for charging clarification upfront to avoid misalignment.
• She adjusts her forecasted charging when her time shifts.
“If I am on an unexpected task, I always ask for what this time should be charged to with my own supervisor before attending/performing the work. If my direct forecasts for charging do not appear to match my actual estimated time in the future, I actively work with my team to change my charging to accurately match where I am spending my time.”
Sarah’s Tips for Easy, Accurate Time Reporting
• Update your calendar regularly — quick reminders count.
• Enter time throughout the day on busy days.
• Talk early with your supervisor about charging guidance.
• Finish your timecard at day’s end.
“Keep your calendar up to date with tasks, even if it is just meetings with yourself with the subject relating to the direct charge. This helps you visually confirm the time you are spending when you fill out your timesheet. Alternatively, during busy days I fill out my timesheet piecemeal throughout the day or before I finish.”
