SECDEF, a softball team comprising Mission Technologies employees in Syracuse, New York, won its “Fall Ball” league championship on Nov. 6.
Stephen Depot, a program manager, said even though they won in the loser’s bracket, they now have a motto that captures the moment: “Best of the worst is better than worst of the best.”
Drew Scanlon, a product management analyst and the team’s manager, brought together a mix of HII colleagues: engineers, production staff, stockroom personnel, project managers and manufacturing team members.
“This team helped to introduce folks that may otherwise never interact in the workplace,” said Depot. “It has brought a very fun mixing of personalities and team-building.”
“This was a great achievement that has given everyone at work across many disciplines something to celebrate and talk about for the foreseeable future,” Depot added. “They were underdogs and came out on top (of the bottom).”
By breaking down silos across disciplines and building meaningful relationships on and off the field, SECDEF exemplifies how HII’s LCF principle of “Build Relationships” drives collaboration that makes us stronger together. Learn more about HII’s LCF and how to put it into action here.
