Mission Technologies Mutts with A Mission Service Dog in Training

You helped name him, and now Gizmo, Mission Technologies’ first sponsored service dog in training with Mutts with A Mission, is well into his journey.

Gizmo follows in the footsteps of Rudder, the expeditionary facility dog sponsored by Newport News Shipbuilding and now serving sailors aboard USS Carl Vinson. Together, both dogs represent HII’s support for those who keep our nation safe.

Earlier this year, Gizmo made one of his first major public appearances at the Sea Air Space Expo at National Harbor in Maryland.

“Seeing Gizmo in person was incredibly special. He handled a busy environment with so much focus and calm. It reminded me why programs like this matter. Dogs helping people and people helping dogs is at the heart of this,” said Janita Colbert from HII Mission Technologies marketing team. “It was also wonderful meeting Brook. You can already see the strong bond forming between them.”

Gizmo is being raised and trained by Brook Colombo, an experienced MWAM trainer who also helped guide Rudder from puppyhood to deployment. Over the next 18 to 24 months, Brook will continue building Gizmo’s skills through socialization, confidence building, and specialized training for one of three roles: service dog, facility dog, or expeditionary facility dog. Gizmo will ultimately grow into the role that best fits his strengths.

“It is exciting to know Gizmo will someday make a real difference for a service member, a team, or an entire unit. He already has the heart for the job,” said Madison Hosking from HII Mission Technologies marketing team.
