Learning the ways of the shipyard can be overwhelming. Whether you’re an experienced supervisor or new foreman, understanding processes and terminology is an ongoing task. Now, the Operations Resource Centers (ORCs) are available to help you master your craft and overcome challenges you may face.
ORC Locations:
- South side of the Outfitting Hall
- River track between Machine Shop and Wet Dock building
- Track 6 at intersection of the river track
- Track 3 at intersection of the east/west track
ORCs are hard to miss throughout the shipyard. While the ORCs definitely draw attention, it’s the resources inside that are most important.
“The original intent of this program was to support new foremen as they take on the daunting task of learning all of the elements of their job and also to support even our most experienced people with specific day to day issues,” said Frank Benge, manager, Industrial Engineering. “From understanding work orders to engaging with departments like Planning, Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Supply Chain, if they have questions, we can get them answers.”
We have the ability to hold conversations in a classroom setting in the ORCs to help superintendents, general foremen, foremen and work leadermen better understand work processes. Any ORC team member will meet one-on-one with you any time it is needed.Â
Donna Melton, manager, Production, Planning & Scheduling, will be assisting with ORCs, pointing shipbuilders in the right direction for help.Â
“Knowing shipbuilders have access to these resource centers helps them resolve issues they may have. This resource has the ability to help encourage development of our shipbuilders throughout the yard,” said Melton. “Shipbuilders on the fence about going into a leadership role will know they have a support team to lean on.”
“We have an opportunity to improve processes,” said Benge. “We can help shipbuilders who work here do so more efficiently for the mission and purpose of our shipyard.”
To get help, it’s quick and easy! Either walk into the ORC and be seen by a coordinator, call x0799 or write an email to IngallsORC@hii-ingalls.com.Â
