For more than 85 years, Ingalls shipbuilders have served as the backbone of our nation’s defense, building ships that project power, maintain peace and safeguard seas across the globe. We remain committed to this important work, knowing that THEIR mission is OUR purpose.
USS Porter (DDG 78), an Ingalls-built Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, is pictured above in the Strait of Magellan. The ship is currently taking part in Southern Seas 2024, which seeks to enhance capability, improve interoperability and strengthen partnerships with countries throughout the U.S. Southern Command.
Pictured below, DDG 78 is joined by USS George Washington (CVN 73), which was built by HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding, and the Henry J. Kaiser-class replenishment oiler USNS John Lenthall (T-AO-189), which was built at HII’s Avondale facility.

As part of Southern Seas 2024, the ships are conducting passing exercises and operations at sea with partner nation maritime forces as the ships circumnavigate the continent of South America, visiting ports in Brazil, Chile and Peru.
This marks the 10th mission to the region since 2007. Like previous deployments, Southern Seas 2024 will foster goodwill, strengthen maritime partnerships and counter threats.
THEIR mission is OUR purpose.
