Shipbuilder Spotlight | Lonnie Fontaine, designer, Engineering

On his 18th birthday, Master Shipbuilder Lonnie Fontaine, designer, Engineering, made the decision to become a shipbuilder. Following in the footsteps of family friends, Lonnie joined the Avondale crew as a pipefitter.

“I retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1989, so I’m proud to know our efforts are essential to our nation’s defense,” said Lonnie. “Watching these ships come to life gives me a great sense of pride.”

After starting out as a pipefitter, Lonnie transferred to the plate shop as a machine operator. He was promoted to supervisor and continued to work in the plate shop for 28 years.

“I moved to Numerical Control as a burner, then went to Engineering as a designer,” said Lonnie. “Now, I currently serve as part of the Nesting group.”

Lonnie is in charge of processing manufacturing aids for all contracts. His role is crucial in helping production meet their scheduling goals.

“I enjoy what I do and enjoy being part of a great team,” said Lonnie. “I’ve learned a lot from all of them and developed great friendships along the way.”

Even with 45 years of experience as a shipbuilder, Lonnie continues to learn about his craft and assist others when possible.

“Being persistent and focusing on long-term goals are the keys to success in this line of work,” said Lonnie. “I take pride in calling myself a shipbuilder. When you love what you do, success will come with it.”
