Building a Legacy | Ruth Wise, first-generation shipbuilder

In addition to building ships that defend our nation, Ingalls shipbuilders build legacies within their families. From those who are carrying on the legacy started by their loved ones to those who are building a legacy for future generations, Ingalls has and will continue to be a way of life for so many families as it has been for more than 85 years.

Ruth Wise, welder, is the first in her family to work at Ingalls. She hopes to inspire her grandsons, showing them that service to the country can take many forms, whether through military service or shipbuilding.

“I chose to be an Ingalls shipbuilder because I wanted to do what I could to support our Armed Forces, who risk their lives every day to keep me, my family and future generations safe. The least I can do is help by building them a safe ship since they are the protectors of our nation. I’m the first in my family to work at Ingalls and hope to pave a path for my grandsons, who are 9 and 11. I hope my role as a shipbuilder teaches them that, whether through military service or building ships, serving and protecting our country can look different for each person. I want to show them that there is no task too great to achieve as long as you apply yourself 110 percent.”
