Information Technology (IT) continues to improve processes to benefit the shipyard with systems like the training event tracker. This new system collects training attendance by craft supervisors.
“After thorough research and development, the tracker became another way to get training to the deck plate,” said George Metzger, systems engineer. “We streamlined the whole process, getting rid of paper rosters and manually putting information into the system.”
The system consists of two parts: a web component that allows administration of courses and tracking attendees, and a mobile app that runs on an Ingalls iPhone and allows a supervisor to scan the badge of a shipbuilder that has just participated in a course.
“One of the bigger benefits of this is you can do it all on your phone at the time you’re doing the training,” said Robert Foster, software development analyst. “This saves us time during the training process for shipbuilders.”
As courses are loaded into the applications, trainers and foremen can access the tracker as a great tool to keep tabs on data. “This application will lessen the load in transit to homeroom,” said Jacob Wasden, shipfitter foreman.
“This will be a game changer for the entire shipyard,” said Adam Kuhnel, software development analyst. “This will enable all shipbuilders to do their job more effectively and efficiently.”
The training event tracker is one of many ways IT uses technology to make workflow procedures a smoother process. The department’s contributions help Ingalls adapt to the future of the industry to sustain the legacy of the shipyard.
“It’s our job to find things that make everyone’s job easier. We take pride in supporting those who build ships that help protect our nation,” said John Pickard, project manager.
