Shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding united behind the company’s annual NNS School Tools Drive, collecting more than 34,000 essential school supplies for local students. This year’s drive set a new record with 401 clear and canvas backpacks donated, supporting all grade levels as they return to school.
Gathering contributions from individuals, departments, buildings and divisions across the yard, numerous shipbuilders set out donation boxes and encouraged participation, collecting school supplies for six partner agencies supported by NNS Gives. In addition, volunteers dedicated hours to sorting items, counting, packing and coordinating deliveries.
“Seeing the shipyard come together for our community is so rewarding,” said Juli Street (K18), lead coordinator for NNS Gives programs. “These supplies not only ease families’ financial burdens – they send a powerful message that our shipbuilders value education and want every child to succeed.”
