National security is always top of mind for us at Newport News Shipbuilding as we design, build and overhaul U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines. The ships we build stand ready to defend our freedom around the world at a moment’s notice.
However, the magnitude of the work we do every day hit closer to home than we could’ve imagined 23 years ago, when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks stunned our nation.
If you’re like me, you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news. Others were too young to remember, and our youngest shipbuilders hadn’t even been born. No matter the category you fall into, we all come together every day to deliver ships that form the Navy’s backbone. NNS-built nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines protect our sailors as they defend our way of life.
As we mark another somber anniversary and continue to grieve the innocent lives lost, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your role and how it supports NNS’ larger mission. Our nation depends on us and the integrity of our work, and Patriot Day is a compelling reminder that we must never waver.
