Newport News Shipbuilding honored more than 260 employees last Friday at the 2024 Model of Excellence Awards Ceremony, celebrating the highest honor that a shipbuilder can receive.
The awards recognized shipbuilders across a variety of programs who embody company values and went above and beyond to overcome challenges and find ways to innovate.
“You demonstrate the dignity of hard work, craftsmanship, and the purpose of our mission,” NNS President Jennifer Boykin told honorees who gathered at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in an Academy Award-themed ceremony.
“You come to work ready to tackle some of the most complex challenges in the world,” Boykin continued. “And you do it with a passion and a fire in your hearts that commands respect, and inspires excellence in others, including me.”
Boykin also praised the family, friends and loved ones who support shipbuilders every day.

Kermit Wiggins Jr. received special recognition as the 2024 Tradesperson of the Year. Starting next year, the award will be named in his honor, Boykin said.
In a video that spotlighted the honorees, Wiggins said he considers his job to be an obligation, not only to the company, but to the Navy and the sailors who depend on NNS-built ships.
“They’re away from home,” Wiggins said. “I get to go home every day. I feel like I almost have to protect them by building a quality ship with a conscious work ethic.”
Other shipbuilders reflected on their work that earned them top honors.
“I know that when I get up and come to work every day that it matters,” said Justin Novak (O68). “I’m never just here punching the clock. The work we’re doing is changing the way these ships are built.”
“It’s amazing to come in here, putting my best foot forward every single day, knowing that what I actually do affects our Navy,” said Stacey Freytes (O53). “And I want to do my best.”
