“Extreme Ownership”

Mission Technologies leaders attend IGNITE session with former U.S. Navy SEAL officer

More than 300 Mission Technologies leaders attended an IGNITE leader learning session with former U.S. Navy SEAL officer Sean Glass on July 22.

Glass, who spent 13 years in the SEAL Teams with three combat deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and Eastern Africa, is now a leadership instructor with Echelon Front. He gave an hour-long overview of the leadership principles in “Extreme Ownership,” the book written by Echelon Front’s founders, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

“Ownership is this idea that ties every single thing together that we’ve talked about this morning so far,” Glass said. “It’s this understanding that if I’m a leader, if I’m a member of a team, everything that happens on that team is my responsibility. All the problems, all the good things, all the bad things, all the issues, all the successes, all of the failures—I have to own all of those things. As a leader, I don’t get to make excuses.”

Glass also said anyone can be a leader—regardless of title.

“I don’t have to be in a position of authority inside of an organization to be a leader,” he said. “All I have to do is have influence and have the ability to influence other people.”

Mission Technologies President Andy Green kicked off the session, saying: “I am really excited about the ‘Extreme Ownership’ concept of leadership, and about learning from the way the SEAL teams have been successful, and applying that in a business role like we’re doing here. … I couldn’t be more excited and proud to have Sean Glass to walk through some ‘Extreme Ownership’ principles with us today.”
