“I was a supervisor helping run a fab shop. I had a neighbor that lived across the street that was a firefighter, and he told me about a volunteer system. Several nights a week and on the weekends, I would go to school on top of my normal job. I caught the bug and decided I would rather be a firefighter than a fabricator. I still work a part-time job doing fabrication for my brother who owns his own business. Being in the fire department here really fits me, because that’s the work everyone is doing in the shipyard. I know what shipbuilders do every day.”
The series features shipbuilders’ photos and their brief statements. If you or another shipbuilder you know is interested in being highlighted, email communications@hii-nns.com.
