Shipbuilders Volunteer at 20th Annual Norfolk Public Schools Science Fair

Six Newport News shipbuilders participated in the 20th annual Norfolk Public Schools Science Fair at Old Dominion University on Saturday, Feb. 17.

The citywide fair brought 115 students from all 43 elementary and middle schools in Norfolk to compete. Each participating student had already won their respective school’s fair. NNS shipbuilders were tapped to act as judges for the students’ presentations. These experiments ranged from air-frying Starburst candies to determining the strength of different brands of paper towels.

“This is such a great opportunity to encourage Norfolk’s youth to lean into STEAM topics and learn the scientific process. Since they have already won their school’s science fairs, we were able to meet students who are especially engaged and passionate about science,” said Jonathan Guthrie (E33). “This is an event that I look forward to volunteering at each year, and NNS should be proud that so many shipbuilders participate in this event.”

All NNS employees are encouraged to sign up for volunteer events and log their volunteer hours at nns.yourcause.com.
