Newport News Shipbuilding joins with the rest of the nation in mourning Jimmy Carter, the United States’ 39th president.
As a U.S. Navy veteran and the only submariner to have served as commander in chief, Carter shared a special connection with shipbuilders. NNS is proud to have participated in the design of USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23), a Seawolf-class submarine that was commissioned in 2005.
He is pictured above in the control room of NNS-built submarine Los Angeles (SSN 688) in 1977.
His legacy also includes his longtime partnership and work with Habitat for Humanity. It’s a cause near and dear to NNS shipbuilders, who have partnered with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg to build more than 20 homes since 2002.
President Joe Biden has declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning, when the official state funeral of the late president will be held in Washington, D.C.
