In 2019, HII and Newport News Shipbuilding partnered with Riverside Health System Foundation, and the fruits of that collaboration have now earned national recognition.
The partnership began when HII and NNS invested in the construction of a state-of-the-art medical facility. Now completed, the HII Education and Simulation Training Center at Riverside epitomizes the future of community health care for patients, physicians, nurses and medical technicians.
Within the center is the Riverside Simulation Training Lab (RSTL). The RSTL was recently recognized by Becker’s Healthcare as one of the nation’s top medical simulation training and education programs.
The RSTL emulates the clinical environment and provides resources for health team members to maintain and expand their clinical proficiency with state-of-the-art, hands-on learning tools.
Similar to the simulation modeling that HII and NNS utilize in the design and construction of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, the RSTL uses simulation modeling that replicates and analyzes real processes, systems or situations.
In the lab, medical professionals throughout the community, including NNS emergency technicians, can learn with the help of interactive, lifelike medical mannequins. They come in a variety of sizes and genders and can simulate heart and lung sounds. Some can even sweat, cry, bleed, convulse and speak phrases and sounds.
