An idea submitted via Newport News Shipbuilding’s MyIdea program recently helped simplify a guide used by shipbuilders across the company – condensing a 62-page document to six pages.
Erynn Lee (X23) submitted an idea to update the Computer User Access System (CUAS) user guide after finding that it was outdated, lengthy and not user friendly. A co-worker had submitted a different idea via the MyIdea program, so Lee gave it a try.
Her MyIdea submission is now the first to be fully implemented through the shipbuilder feedback program, which launched in July. Eighteen additional MyIdea submissions are in various stages of implementation.
The CUAS user guide updates took the Cybersecurity, Compliance and Quality (T51) Team about six hours to complete, and helped identify other documents that needed to be reviewed. The MyIdea Team estimates the update will save NNS a minimum of 300 man-hours in a three-month period.
Lee said “it means a lot” to know her idea will help ease the CUAS process for shipbuilders across the company. She encourages others to submit ideas to make positive changes.
“It’s worth taking a shot,” Lee said.
