Mission Technologies Volunteers Inspire Young Minds

Kelly Gallagher and Miguel Ortiz, Mission Technologies employees in Corpus Christi, Texas, represented HII at a Read Across America event on March 3 at Cullen Place Elementary School.

Gallagher and Ortiz spoke briefly about their careers, sparking curiosity about engineering and project management among the children. Then they spent time reading a book from the school library to third and fourth grade classes.

“As a mom of three and an avid reader, I was inspired to participate in the Read Across America event to help children see that the world has limitless possibilities,” said Gallagher, a project management analyst in Mission Technologies’ All-Domain Operations group. “Reading reveals worlds you never thought possible. It is food for your brain. It doesn’t matter what you read—just READ! There is something for everyone.”

“I was inspired to participate in the Read Across America even as I remember special guests with job titles like Engineer, Police Officer, Fire Fighter, and Doctor coming into my classrooms growing up, and I always thought it would be so cool to be in that position,” said Ortiz, an aircraft engineer in Mission Technologies’ All-Domain Operations group. “Reading can provide a pathway to your dream because knowledge is power, and books are filled with knowledge.”

Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone. For more information, visit nea.org.
