“A Pleasant and Unexpected Surprise”

Three employees receive “On-The-Spot” ethics awards

Three Mission Technologies employees recently received “On-The-Spot” ethics awards for actions that support HII’s company values: Integrity, Safety, Respect, Engagement, Responsibility and Performance.

Maria M. Hall, a logistics management analyst in the Fleet Sustainment business group, was nominated by her manager, Steven Richardson. Her citation from the Ethics and Business Conduct Office said, in part:

“Since your employment began with Mission Technologies four years ago, you have exhibited positive HII ethical behavior and values in your areas of responsibilities every day. You are described as very professional and a great teammate to work with and learn from. Your engagement to all stakeholders is shown through your integrity with proper communication and quality of products. … You assume responsibility for all your work and is eager to improve problematic areas.”

“I am proud to be a part of HII and the ethics HII stands on,” Hall said.

William H. McDonough Jr., a project manager in the C5ISR business group, was nominated by his colleague, Wesley Baquero. His citation from the Ethics and Business Conduct Office said, in part:

“You are being recognized for your consistent demonstration of exceptional behavior and values, always going above and beyond to support the organization’s success. You show professionalism and dedication, even when not directly involved in a task, ensuring its completion and continuous improvement. As a mentor, you provide guidance and support, fostering a positive work environment, and your willingness to collaborate and help others grow is unparalleled making you an invaluable asset to HII.”

“It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise to find out a colleague had nominated me for the ethics award,” McDonough said. “It reinforced that our daily interactions and collaborative efforts were underpinned by our core values and what is fundamental at HII.”

Mary Beth Sword, an HRIS analyst in the IT function, was nominated by her colleague, Mandi Arney. Her citation from the Ethics and Business Conduct Office said, in part:

“Ms. Arney characterized you as being an employee with impeccable and professional ethics who always strive to go the extra mile, regardless of what is being asked of you. Your past and current experience has garnered you an amazing skill set, including remarkable patience and a professional etiquette that help others see your perspective in a professional manner. … You repeatedly go above and beyond in training individuals outside your own department and are never too busy to offer insight into basic skill inquiries, uplift a coworker in a stressful situation, or act as a second set of eyes to proofread or provide perspective in various settings or situations.”

I was surprised and honored to receive the award!” Sword said. “Maybe it’s how I was raised, but the commitment to ethics and integrity is an intrinsic part of my make-up and was and is expected to be part of my work life. … Ethics is especially important here at HII because of what we do to support our nation’s defense. While we may not be on the front lines, doing our job right makes it easier for those on the front lines to do theirs.”

Employees are encouraged to nominate and recognize fellow employees who demonstrate HII’s company values. For more information, refer to Corporate Procedure CO A605. The nomination form is available on the Compliance intranet page.
