Newport News Shipbuilding is kicking off its Change Agent Program – an important step in the company’s efforts to improve leadership culture and performance. Nearly 300 shipbuilders from across the company have agreed to serve as change agents.
These employees are expected to commit to one year of attending monthly sessions, modeling behaviors learned and delivering targeted messages to their peers. They also will provide input and feedback for change efforts.
Potential change agents were identified during the Inspiring Culture Change Survey from Aug. 29-Sept. 8. Employees identified as influencers during the survey were invited to become change agents. They represent the top 2% of the employee population by measure of influence.
These shipbuilders were recently invited to participate in a recognition reception.
“You are clear leaders. People listen to you. They trust what you say. They believe you have good intentions and are honest with those around you,” said NNS President Jennifer Boykin in a message to potential change agents. “I want you to realize what an incredible achievement this is.”
Thomasina Wright, vice president of Fleet Support Programs, and Jason Ward, vice president of Virginia-Class Submarine Construction, are the executive sponsors for the effort.

“I look forward to working closely with you to create a culture that cultivates engagement, innovation and improved performance,” she said.
