Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School welcomed more than 120 high school students from New Horizons Regional Education Centers last week.
Students heard real-life experiences from current and former apprentices, engaged with industry leaders and toured The Apprentice School facility. Over two days, students from New Horizons’ Butler Farm and Woodside Lane campuses participated in the event, which also included a shipyard windshield tour. NNS and New Horizons have a longstanding partnership that has created a pipeline for skilled trades hires.
The Good Life Solution Program is a collection of partnerships between New Horizons and local employers looking to improve the way they recruit, hire, train and retain entry-level new hires out of high school. New Horizons students hired at HII, NNS and HII’s Mission Technologies Division through the Good Life Solution Program have a one-year retention rate of more than 90%.
“I want to thank you all for the part that you played in planning, facilitating, organizing and contributing to the very successful field trip to Newport News Shipbuilding’s Apprentice School,” said Crystal Neal, New Horizons career coordinator. “The students and chaperones were impressed.”
