The Virginia-Class Submarine Program recently completed a milestone in the construction of Oklahoma (SSN 802), when the ship’s bow was transported from the Supplemental Modular Outfitting Facility (SMOF) to the Modular Outfitting Facility (MOF). One crew in particular was crucial to the preparation of the move: the blocking team.
Led by Stephen Pearce (X36) and Jacob Sinniger (X36), the blocking team prepared the unit by elevating it with wooden blocks, enough that a transporter could position itself under the unit.
“We do a dangerous job,” said Chase Gaines (X36). “We are always aware of safety. Everyone has to know their role and respect the rest of the crew to do this job successfully.”
The blocking crew does not only support the VCS program – they support the work of the entire shipyard, and the entire crew is on first shift.
“We need everyone ready to go at all times,” said Dylan Dye (X36). “It’s not just about moving components, but also the team. We support the entire shipyard, so the crew is always on the move.”
