NNS Team Marks Five Years Without an Accident

Members of an X67 Coating Records team recently celebrated five years of going accident free, crediting the importance of open communication and a company culture that drives home the importance of safety, among other factors.

Vernon Floyd, the manager who leads the team and a Master Shipbuilder, has seen other employees injured during his decades in the shipyard. “For this reason, safety is near and dear to me,” he said. “I seek to express the importance of safety to my team as frequently as possible.”

Although team members mostly work in an office setting, sometimes they have assignments in other areas of the shipyard. Floyd said it’s important to stress safety requirements such as proper personal protective equipment and being aware of surroundings. That includes maintaining clear walkways, good ergonomic posture at work stations and handrails while on stairs.

Other best practices include making sure electrical connections are not overloaded and maintaining a clean workspace that avoids tripping hazards

“As a manager, I always encourage open communication about safety concerns, which helps to create a culture where each team member feels responsible for not only their individual safety, but for the safety and well-being of their co-workers as well,” he said.

His team members agree.

“Continue to be cautious and report any unsafe conditions in the workplace,” said Cartrena Crutchfield.   “If we concentrate on the health and safety for all employees, this will in turn safeguard our future as a business.”

Letita Boone added: “A workplace is truly safe when employees prioritize safety and integrity, even when nobody is watching.”

Kyle Williams praised the company’s culture that drives a commitment to safety. “We use our values and ethics to guide every decision, helping us maintain a workplace where safety and well-being are always top priorities,” he said.
