Edward Belvin (X11) started his career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1966 as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War ramped up. In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Eleven months later, Belvin deployed to Vietnam, spending a year serving in combat.
For his actions during the war, Belvin was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. As Veterans Day approaches this weekend, Belvin said he is proud to have served.
“It makes you feel good to know that you served your country,” he said.
Belvin encourages young people to explore military service. “They teach you respect and so much more,” he said. “They’re rough on you in boot camp, but you learn a lot.”
After an honorable discharge from the Army, Belvin returned to his job at NNS. Today, he works in the Steel Production Facility and is happy to share his knowledge with fellow shipbuilders. “I enjoy the work and the people,” Belvin said.
While his military service ended more than 50 years ago, Belvin is glad to still contribute to the nation’s defense as a shipbuilder. He said shipbuilders should understand the important role they play for the women and men who are currently serving and those who will serve in the future.
“A lot of us have people who are serving on aircraft carriers or submarines,” he said. “You want to make sure you do everything right to keep them safe.”
