A New Bundle of Joy? Make Sure They’re Covered.
Life changes — and your benefits may need to change too
Experiencing a major life event like having a baby? Make sure your benefits are updated to match. Certain qualifying life events allow you to make changes to your benefits right away — no need to wait for next year’s Annual Enrollment. This helps ensure you and your family have the right protection when you need it most.
What counts as a qualifying life event?
- Birth or adoption of a child
- Marriage or divorce
- Retirement
- Death in the family
- Losing coverage under someone else’s insurance plan
Remember the 31‑day rule: Under HII’s plan provisions, you can adjust your benefits during the year only if you experience a qualifying life event — and you must make those changes within 31 days of the event.

Turning Insights Into Action: Supporting Chronic Pain & Wellbeing
The Mission Technologies Wellbeing Committee recently conducted a survey to better understand how pain and chronic pain affect employees’ daily lives.
What we found
Your feedback revealed that while many employees experience occasional mild to moderate discomfort with limited impact on daily functioning, a smaller group faces more persistent or significant pain that may benefit from additional support and resources. Most respondents reported that their energy and motivation remain largely unaffected, with more than half noting that discomfort rarely or never interferes with their engagement at work. These insights highlight an opportunity to offer more targeted resources for those managing ongoing pain.
Actions based on what we learned from the survey:
The Wellbeing Committee hosted a HERO: HII Employees Reach Out webinar: Move Well, Live Well: Everyday Strategies for Musculoskeletal Health, which explored practical ways to care for your body and reduce daily discomfort. If you missed it, the replay is available on the Mission Technologies intranet under the Tools & Resources toolbar – choose Benefits & Wellbeing then the Benefits and Wellbeing Webinars tile.
How your HII benefits can help:
HII offers several no-cost benefits programs designed to help you move more comfortably, build healthy habits, and get personalized guidance when you need it:
- Hinge Health is a digital exercise therapy program that helps reduce back, joint, and muscle pain through simple, app-based routines you can do anytime. Many employees have shared how approachable the exercises are and how tools like the Enso device help calm pain and build confidence in daily movement.
- Wellness Online gives you a personalized space to explore healthy habits, track your progress, and stay motivated. From quick learning journeys to mindfulness tools, the platform makes it easy to build small, sustainable changes—and even earn points for quarterly prize drawings.
- Vida Health offers one-on-one coaching to support nutrition, weight management, chronic condition support, and daily healthy routines. With guidance from a personal coach, you can build habits that improve energy, mobility, and overall wellbeing—at your own pace.
These resources are here to help you feel your best—physically, mentally, and emotionally. No matter where you fall on the pain spectrum, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. By participating in your division’s wellbeing committee, you help HII prioritize and enhance future wellbeing offerings. To get connected, email bewell@hii-co.com.
Up next: The Mission Technologies Wellbeing Committee will host an Upcoming Sleep Survey (November 9–20) through Wellness Online. Sleep plays a crucial role in energy, mood, productivity, and overall wellbeing, and your feedback will help us better understand employees’ sleep habits and challenges. Participants can earn Benefit & Wellbeing swag and be entered into a gift card drawing.
If you’re registered for Wellness Online, you’ll automatically receive an invitation. Not registered? Log in to MyChart via myquadmed.com/hii and set up your Personify Health account to get started.

Could a Quick Lung Check Help Protect Your Health?
If you’re between 50 and 80 and have a history of smoking, lung cancer screening could be one of the most important steps you take for your health.
A low-dose CT scan is quick, painless, and can catch lung cancer early—often before symptoms start—when treatment is most effective.
You may qualify if you:
• Currently smoke or used to smoke
• Have about a 20 pack-year history (for example, 1 pack a day for 20 years)
What’s the scan like?
You’ll lie on a table while a short scanning machine takes detailed images of your lungs. It takes about a minute and requires no prep.
Not sure whether you qualify? Your HII benefit Color Health can help you determine your eligibility by answering a few simple questions.

THE KNOW YOUR NUMBERS PROGRAM
American Diabetes Month
Understanding what’s happening inside your body is one of the strongest tools you have to prevent diabetes and protect your overall health. That’s what the Know Your Numbers program is designed to do. This quick screening gives you a snapshot of key indicators — including blood pressure, cholesterol, and A1C, one of the most important markers for diabetes risk.
By checking these numbers each year, you can catch potential issues early and make informed decisions that support long‑term health. Whether you’re monitoring changes or simply staying proactive, this screening helps you take control before problems develop.
And while you’re there, you can take care of two priorities at once: flu shots are available at Know Your Numbers events in proximity to the HII Family Health Centers, making it easy to get both your biometric screening and your annual flu vaccine in a single visit.
Why Participate?
Beyond the personal health benefits, completing the program could help you save $600 annually on your HII Anthem medical insurance premium. Employees who participate but do not qualify for the premium discount will be entered into a quarterly wellness prize drawing.
Program Dates and Requirements
The program runs each year from July 1 through March 31. To earn the $600 premium savings beginning July 1, eligible employees must complete both program requirements by March 31:
- Health Check Survey
Complete the online survey through QuadMed MyChart. - Biometric Health Screening
Get screened at an HII Family Health Center, your personal healthcare provider, a Quest Patient Service Center*, or at designated onsite events — including those starting this month.
*Quest Patient Service Centers for Mission Technologies and Newport News Shipbuilding – Charleston Operations employees only.
