Safety Song Winner Announced

The votes are in, and Nishae Falu (X33) is the winner of Newport News Shipbuilding’s 2024 Safety Song Contest for her entry titled “Safety First.” Michael King (X36) was named runner-up for his song titled “Same Way I Came.”

Falu and King were among the shipbuilders who entered the contest, which was meant to reinforce the importance of safety while encouraging employees to show off their talent and creativity. Song lyrics incorporate shipyard safety themes. The Safety Song Committee selected the top five entries, and shipbuilders voted last week for their favorites.

“It was very exciting to bring back the Safety Song Contest after 10 years. More than 2,100 shipbuilders, friends and family members voted this year,” said Nicole Lawrence (O27). “Thanks to all of the contestants who submitted songs and everyone who took the time to vote. It is great to see such positive engagement toward safety.”

As the winner, Falu will receive a number of prizes, including a professionally produced music video for her song, a VIP tour of the shipyard for her and her family, two VIP tickets to the Arkansas (SSN 800) christening ceremony, and mentoring sessions with NNS senior leaders. Both Falu and King have been invited to perform their songs live at Coastal Fermentory at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
