HII’s Weekly News Digest is compiled every Friday by the Corporate Communications team to summarize and highlight news stories of significance to the company.

Mission Technologies Named On $1.9 Billion Shipyard Support Contract: Inside Defense reported on Tuesday that HII’s Mission Technologies division was included on a Navy contract worth up to $1.9 billion to support attack submarine maintenance and modernization availabilities at the four public shipyards. The award includes a total of eight companies for work that will run until August 2030 at least, and possibly through August 2033 if options are exercised. The support work will be spread between the Navy’s four public maintenance yards with 35% occurring at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, 25% at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington State and 20% each at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine.

Destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128) Completes Builder’s Sea Trials: MarineLink reported on Sunday that HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division successfully completed builder’s sea trials for guided missile destroyer Ted Stevens (DDG 128), taking a key step toward delivery to the U.S. Navy. Conducted in the Gulf of America, the trials tested engineering, navigation and combat systems confirming the destroyer’s readiness for the next phase of trials. The destroyer’s testing also featured the AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar, designed to strengthen air and missile defense against advanced threats. Newsweek reported on Monday that the Ted Stevens (DDG 128) is among the latest Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to advance toward fleet service, underscoring the Navy’s continued reliance on the class as a core surface combatant. Ingalls has delivered 35 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to the Navy, including the first Flight III, USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), in 2023.

HII Expands High-Energy Laser Capabilities: ExecutiveBiz reported on Wednesday that HII is investing in a new integration, production and test facility to support the Army’s enduring-high energy laser program. The site will expand the company’s existing laser capabilities, enabling assembly and acceptance testing of prototypes and subsystems. It will also provide advanced validation of power, thermal and laser performance. The new facility will align with the Army’s modular open systems approach and prepare high-energy laser systems for low-rate initial production and operational deployment. Grant Hagen, president of Mission Technologies’ Warfare Systems group, said the investment demonstrates scalable and mission-ready solutions that protect the warfighter.

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Progress Continues During Shutdown: Inside Defense reported on Wednesday that the Defense Department will carry on with activities to develop the fiscal year 2027 budget request in the background of the federal government shutdown that began Wednesday. The shutdown will trigger a furlough of about 335,000 civilian DOD employees, according to a Pentagon document. That’s about 45% of the total non-uniform employees working for the DOD. It is unclear how many civilian employees would be retained to continue to work on each of the services FY 2027 budget requests. Military personnel will remain on duty executing assigned functions. Unlike prior years, the Pentagon did not provide Congress a topline budget projection for FY 2027 or future years in its FY 2026 spending request, but the Trump administration is likely to once again target $1 trillion in defense spending next year.

Thyssenkrupp To Spin Off Warship Business: Reuters reported on Thursday that Thyssenkrupp is aiming for Oct. 20 to spin-off of its defense division, TKMS, in a deal that could value the warship builder at up to $3.2 billion. The company in August said it was hoping to list TKMS, which makes submarines, frigates and mine-sweeping technology, in mid-October. After the spinoff, Thyssenkrupp will remain the majority shareholder with a 51% stake, while 10% will be owned by the nonprofit Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation and the remaining 39% will be transferred to shareholders. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Thyssenkrupp foresees a market that could nearly double in value to $71.5 billion by 2033 as Europe seeks to modernize and expand its submarine fleet to deter Russia. Germany, with one of Europe’s fastest rising military budgets, is looking at expanding its navy due to concerns that the Baltic Sea could become a key battleground in the event of a wider conflict with Russia. The company’s order book has more than tripled to $21.7 billion over the past five years, boosted in part by European efforts to increase defense spending in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine and uncertainty over U.S. military support.
