HII corporate and NNS employees recently volunteered at An Achievable Dream Academy in Newport News for an exciting STEM challenge with the academy’s 115 third graders.

Hosted on Thursday, July 11, by HII’s Corporate Sustainability Program, students worked in groups to design and build small aluminum foil boats. They then tested each boat to see how many pennies they could hold before sinking.

“This challenge gives students a chance to leverage what they learn in school in a very unique way,” said Jeffrica Key, corporate sustainability manager at HII. “These activities are important for sparking interest in the world of work, with an emphasis on STEM fields.”

Volunteers shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while contributing to our sustainability goal of increasing employee volunteers by 10% annually through 2030.

HII encourages all employees to participate in volunteer opportunities and make a positive impact in the communities where they live and work.
