Shipbuilders rallied in support for this year’s Relay For Life, raising over $40,000 for the American Cancer Society. “Game Over. Let’s End Cancer” was an impactful slogan, generating interest, competition and unity. A record 1,300 Relay For Life T-shirts – depicting a retro video game from the 80s – were sold during the campaign.

Newport News Shipbuilding sponsored the Relay For Life event and was represented by 27 teams. The support of executive sponsor Thomasina Wright, vice president of Fleet Support Programs, helped generate early momentum, and participation intensified throughout the campaign.

Shipbuilders showed up in strong numbers at the Relay For Life event on May 17 at Port Warwick. Many teams continued their fundraising while enjoying a live band, dancing and food. Campaign donations are still coming in. Final numbers and the top teams will be announced at the Relay For Life Celebration at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at Brooks Crossing. All team members are invited to attend.

The NNS Relay For Life team would like to thank everyone who made this year’s campaign such a success, including team captains and those who supported them, the NNS volunteers who came to the event, and everyone who made a donation, bought a T-shirt or requested a luminaria.
