Given the impending snow forecast, we are making the following changes to Newport News Shipbuilding operations to ensure shipbuilder safety:
With the weather forecast continuing to call for significant amounts of snowfall over the next 24 hours, we are making the following update to Newport News Shipbuilding operations to ensure shipbuilder safety:
For first shift tomorrow, Feb. 20, only essential personnel should report. Your supervisor will notify you if you are considered essential and are being asked to work during this time. If your supervisor does not contact you, you should not report to work. We will provide updated guidance tomorrow morning for second and third shifts.
As a reminder, the following changes are in effect for Feb. 19:
- First shift: Liberal leave.
- Second shift: Only essential personnel should report.
- Third shift: Only essential personnel should report.
Because we rarely experience such severe winter weather, please review the time charging information below and note that employees will be paid for their shift, beginning second shift, Feb. 19, through first shift, Feb. 20, as follows:
Essential personnel: THANK YOU for keeping our shipyard safe and operational during the storm! Time charging instructions will be provided by your supervisors.
Nonessential personnel for second shift, Feb. 19, through first shift, Feb. 20: Hourly and salaried personnel not notified by your supervisor as essential personnel should not report. You will be paid for your scheduled shift and should use code X-9029 to enter time.
Because our mission to the U.S. Navy is so important, we are asking that work that can be performed safely from home should be continued in the following ways:
- Salaried employees who are currently working from home are asked to continue doing so and charge to the appropriate charge.
- Salaried employees who do not currently work from home are also being asked to work from home for their shift, if possible, and charge to the appropriate charge.
Please note that hourly and salaried personnel who are on pre-approved leaves (paid time off (PTO), annual leave, paid sick/personal time, disability, workers’ compensation, family medical leave, etc.) during the essential-personnel period should charge as they normally would.
Time charging guidance for liberal leave:
- Salaried employees can work from home with management approval and those who choose to take liberal leave may use PTO- if they have a balance available, borrow PTO, or flex with supervisor’s approval. Salaried employees cannot use dock time.
- Hourly employees who choose to take liberal leave may use annual leave, paid sick/personal time or take dock time (code 325).
Future updates will be communicated via the following channels: Employee Information Phone Line (1-877-871-2058), NNS to Go app, company email, NNS President Kari Wilkinson’s Facebook page and NNS websites.
